Canada's top builder acquires Sarasota golf course

The Sunrise Golf Club in Sarasota has been closed since 2004.

The Sunrise Golf Club in Sarasota has been closed since 2004.

Mattamy Homes, the largest home builder in Canada, acquired a long-closed golf course in Sarasota and plans to build hundreds of homes there.

Toronto-based Mattamy paid more than $14 million for the 120-acre Sunrise Golf Club in Sarasota, which has been closed since 2004.

Working with Sarasota-based developer Vanguard Land, Mattamy plans to build approximately 400 single-family homes and multi-family units at abandoned golf course.

A condominium association representing residents who live along the weed-covered golf course negotiated a covenant with Mattamy that requires, among other things, a 175-foot buffer between existing residences and new ones.

The Canadian company has been operating in Florida since it acquired a construction company in Jacksonville.
