Seven models are available, from a 2000-series holding a seatrout-compatible 180 yards of 10-pound braid, to an 8000-series (tarpon, grouper, etc.) carrying about 400 yards of 65-pound braid, $179.95.

Shimano Twin Power
fish.shimano.com — Twin Power saltwater series reels showcase Shimano’s renewed focus on getting the most out of metals used in the construction of gears and bodies. That focus is embodied by the term “Hagane,” which basically refers to the understanding and manipulation of metal. Hagane has its roots in Japan’s Osaka region, with a 400-year tradition of metalworking. At the “Hagane” heart of Shimano’s fishing reels is a cold-forged aluminum gear. This component allows Shimano designers to make the most out of the company’s X-Ship system of pinion gear support and alignment, engineered to deliver maximum cranking power. The reel body itself has also received the Hagane treatment to deliver additional support. Captain Steve Rodger of Key West, an early adopter of the Twin Power series reels, says the reels are ideal for heavyweight applications once the domain of revolving spool reels only. “We mostly used conventional reels for tarpon and sharks, because under very heavy drag, spinning reel bodies would tend to twist,” he said. “These Twin Power reels do not twist.” Shimano offers purpose-built retrieve ratios within the Twin Power series—torque-premium 4.9:1 in the 8000 and 10000 models, and a faster, lure-animating 6.2:1 in the 4000, 5000 and 14000 (a tuna special), $479.99 to $619.99.
